Rapid technological development resulted in fossil fuel depletion and intensified hazards of global warming. This generated a need to urgently search for energy efficient and eco friendly alternatives to safeguard human and environmental interests across the globe. Power and energy sector got motivated to search for renewable and low carbon power generation technologies. On the basis of this background, this paper gives an overview of a cooperation project between university of Applied Sciences, Soest and University of Capetown, South Africa. This project is funded by research ministry from Germany and South Africa. It targets operation, control and energy management studies of a laboratory model of Hybrid Power System (HPS) consisting mainly wind turbine, micro turbine and Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) contributing to the development of distributed generation. This paper also reviews state of art of TELELAB using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and WinCC visualization software.
