This paper describes a distributed energy storage system to minimize the impact of heat pumps (HPs) in a typical Dutch low voltage (LV) grid during an extreme winter situation. The degree of flexibility of the storage to facilitate the electricity grid is determined throughout the year by considering the limitations of the network capacity. Thermal storage applications are integrated to control the HPs independently of the heat demands. Reinforcement of the LV-grid is avoidable. An average of 30% of the total electricity demand is shiftable. The limitations of LV-grid have only a large effect on the load shift during extreme cold weather conditions.
