This paper presents a comparative study of two solutions for implementing a pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming control for LED lamps. The study is based on the two-phase LCC resonant converter as lamp driver. The first method is the phase shift mode, where the off time is achieved by imposing a 180º phase shift between the control signals of each inverter legs. The second method is the burst mode, where the off time is achieved by shutting down the drive signals of the converter. The efficiency of the converter is used as the main figure-of-merit in order to evaluate each PWM implementation. Other issues such as current stress, dynamic response and audible noise are also considered.
