For smart home systems, simple single carrier wireless transmission systems with small bandwidth are used. The operation range and the reliability of these systems are limited due to effects of the indoor multipath propagation environment. Technologies without any or with long term frequency agility only cannot prevent link failures due to deep fades and fast fading. Common frequency hopping protocols change the channel continuously without consideration of the actual channel quality. Furthermore, they require regular frame exchange for synchronization, but in home automation data traffic occurs only very sporadic. In this paper, we focus on a system, which utilizes good channels and avoids unnecessary overhead, but at the same time is able to use alternative channels in case of a deep fades. The optimal number of channels for the 2.4 GHz range is identified. Furthermore, different protocols for the initial connection setup are compared.
