There are new challenges to face by network operators and service providers in the wake of convergent fixed and mobile networks. The new, complex traffic scenarios lead to various kinds of performance issues. Before the deployment of new, feature-rich nodes, the performance capabilities of the overall architecture should be verified in many ways. Node and link capacities must be planned – and as part of this: modeled – for mass usage, taking various traffic mix and mobility scenarios into account. This paper introduces a complex traffic modeling methodology. In order to allow complex traffic modeling of various use cases, the methodology features specific variables of the control plane (mainly session- and mobility-related) and the user plane (mainly traffic mix composition-related) of Fixed and Mobile Convergence (FMC) networks. Flexible tools for network planning and performance management should feature the variables introduced in this paper, in order to allow complex handling of FMC use cases.
