All powerful methods to control an induction machine require some knowledge at least some of the machine parameters. There are several methods in use to identify these parameters. Yet all of the standard identification procedures require either a converter or a second machine in order to accelerate the machine under test to synchronous rotor speed. This paper deals with a new identification method that requires neither a converter nor a second machine. The device under test is accelerated up to idle running speed with different centrifugal masses attached to its shaft. With these run up tests it is possible to determine the moment of inertia and the machine parameters. The identification is based on a genetic algorithm. With this method it is possible to take into account nonlinearities of the machine such as mechanical losses and the skin effect in the rotor bars. The concept has been tested successfully on both a 3 kW and a 11 kW three phase induction machine.
