Emission free fuel cell electric drive is one of the key technologies supported by the German government. It requires most efficient and lightweight electric converters. Comparing the masses of all the components in this automotive system, boost inductors have the best potential to save resources in volume and weight. Highly efficient thermal management together with new ferrite materials and a higher switching frequency will lead to more economic automotive power electronics solutions. This paper describes the co-funded development of a new type of inductor, where a new developed ferrite material with maximized flux density enables weight and cost reduction. Furthermore the integration of hard magnets leads to further size reduction by utilization of a magnetically biased core.
