This paper investigates the problem of data redundancy in a network coded wireless mesh with opportunistic overhearing and proposes a few sending policies for the relaying nodes to improve the overall transmission efficiency. By simulating various wireless meshed architectures, the advantage of network coding over state of the art routing schemes and the challenges of this new technology are shown. A Python test–bed was built to provide maximum control of the network coding parameters and the simulation environment to the user, facilitating quick construction of simulation setups on top of it. The paper highlights the problem of redundant transmissions of data by the overhearing nodes in a wireless mesh and with the help of three simple simulation setups that are built on top of the testbed, the paper provides a brief insight into the selection of the appropriate relays. Continuous transmissions by the selected relays could still contribute to increased redundant transmissions and therefore some sending policies can be employed by the relays to decrease the redundant transmissions. We finally discuss some sending policies in a dynamic wireless mesh network and show that by choosing the appropriate sending policy, the efficiency of the simulated system can be improved up to 190%.
