The two-phase cooling performance of two different porous structures, namely, open tunnel (OPT) and closed tunnel (CLT), were tested and compared. The results show that the boiling performance of the OPT porous structure is higher when compared to that of the CLT structure. Specifically, the OPT structure shows higher heat transfer coefficient values. Furthermore, while the pressure drop trend is same for both structures, the OPT structure exhibits slightly lower pressure drop relative to the pressure drop for the CLT structure. From both two-phase cooling performance and pressure drop, it is concluded that the OPT structure has superior performance compared to the CLT structure and is better suited for thermal management of future power-dense wide band-gap devices.
