In the field of auxiliary power supplies for the light traction vehicles such as trolleybuses, trams and eventually hybrid busses the customers’ demands increasingly focuses on low volume and mass of the converters. The high efficiency, power density and low audible noise are not of lower importance while EMC regulations become tougher. One way to cope with such requirements in the auxiliary drives design is to utilise new topologies and/or state-ofthe-art power devices which would allow operating the converters at higher frequencies and temperatures with comparable or even lower losses. Typical case is the proliferation of the SiC devices in various areas of power electronics. This paper describes the design points and achieved results of the bi-directional Boost / Buck DC converter based on SiC JFET modules which was intended as an input voltage stabilizer within the auxiliary power supplies structure.
