Link Level Performance of a Multicarrier CDMA Based Device-to-Device Integrated OFDMA Cellular System

Device-to-Device communication (D2D) has been a hot research topic in recent years, especially concerning the integration of D2D and conventional cellular network. Currently, most of the D2D integration studies assume that D2D UEs and cellular UEs use identical multiple access (MA) technology, for the convenience of integration and backward compatibility. In this paper, we investigate a D2D integrated system using multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) as the MA scheme for D2D UEs. The idea is to make use of the processing gains, obtained by the frequency domain spreading, against critical interference, especially from cellular UEs. The study focuses on investigating the link level performance using the proposed despreading and equalization schemes for two different D2D scenarios: D2D pair and D2D cluster. Simulations demonstrate that significant gain against critical narrowband interference (from cellular UEs) can be obtained by the despreading operation. Furthermore, the gain can be enhanced if the critically interfered chips (subcarriers) can be identified and eliminated at the despreading stage. Therefore, MC-CDMA is considered as a promising MA scheme for D2D UEs in case of no cell coordination, especially at cell edges.
