Power converters require passive magnetic components which represent up to 40 % of the total cost and volume. Rise in the operating frequency brought by wide gap semi-conductors such as GaN allows a drastic decrease in the size of inductor providing that effects of power losses are controlled. Two complementary approaches are investigated for that purpose: (i) reduction of intrinsic power losses thanks to a favorable microstructure and (ii) shaping of magnetic cores integrating a thermal management. Tape casted inductors made of NiZn spinel ferrite with large thermal exchange capability have been successfully dimensioned and tested up to 5 MHz.
