The need to increase power density and having compact and cheaper system is increasing and increasing, especially in consumer applications. In the last decade many strategies have been investigated, but the most promising and easy to implement is still to increase the switching frequency. The main issue of this strategy is that the switching losses in the transistors increase with the increasing of the switching frequency. Therefore in order to apply this strategy new devices with better performance (switching and thermal) are needed. In this paper a new generation of IGBTs called Field Stop III will be introduced. These are based on an innovative Ultra Field Stop (UFS) Technology and very thin thickness. By decreasing the thickness of the device the UFS IGBTs offer very low conduction and switching losses. At the same time, trade-off between conduction and switching losses are optimized for certain application. The benefits in terms of case temperature reduction during operation, power losses reduction and ruggedness are verified in a 2 kW quasi-resonant converter system
