This paper deals with a boost converter offering a higher boost rate with a higher efficiency in residential Fuel-Cell applications. Since Fuel-Cells provide lower dc voltage (e.g., 12 [V]) while the power converter needs higher voltage (e.g., 400 [V]) inside, a boost dc-dc converter with a high boost rate (e.g., 33) is needed. Since a high boost rate results in a lower efficiency in the conventional single-ended boost converter, an indirect dc-dc conversion scheme with a high-frequency transformer is applied in the current products. Though, it results in a bulky, heavily and costly converter. As an alternative, a dc-dc converter consisting of two single-ended boost converters in cascade connection has been focused on in this study. Available efficiency under the same condition with the current products is investigated with simulations.
