Converters optimization is one of the challenges of Power Conversion applications and the use of Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductors is a promising solution due to the enhanced performance in terms of switching behaviour. The benefits of the Silicon Carbide devices are demonstrated on existing Power Converters for Wind and Traction applications. Silicon Carbide based power semiconductors are now considered a key component for Power Converters efficiency improvement, passive components downsizing and cooling system simplification. Breakdown electric field almost ten times and thermal conductivity three times higher than Silicon are the most significant advantages of SiC. Despite the advantages, Silicon Carbide based modules involves a series of challenges such as SiC substrates manufacturing and defect density, low inductance packages and lifetime increase, between others. In this paper, the optimization of Power Converters for Wind and Traction applications by using SiC based semiconductors is analysed.
