Power supplies of consumer products require new strategies in order to further reduce losses, especially with emphasis on various operating points. The study presented here deals with an improved PFC stage under consideration of adapted boost inductor and capacitance at the drain node of the MOSFET. The detailed overall analysis allows to optimize a standard worldwide mains design. Additionally, the benefits of narrowing the input voltage range (European mains) can be quantified. Designs with lower losses and equal or even less geometric dimensions become possible. Numerical simulations identify the improvements which can be confirmed by measurements with an appropriate converter prototype and customized inductors.
