A continuous growing power which has to be transmitted through the grid requires possibilities to effectively control its load flow. To maintain an efficient and secure system, phase shifting transformers (PSTs) are used to shift load flows from highly burdened lines to other parallel, less burdened ones. In this paper, the fundamentals of PST modelling are illustrated. To optimize their effect, a placement and tapping strategy is introduced based on the heuristic particle swarm optimization. Three models of combining PSTs with conventional redispatch are given and explained. Moreover, the optimum for PST placement and tap changer setting are calculated. Based on a synthetic grid the algorithm is tested and the results are shown.
