Due to the progress of the energy transition, with an increasing number of converter-based generation and a reduction of conventional synchronous generators, the voltage and frequency stability is threatened. Actually, instantaneous load requirements are served within the instantaneous reserve capacity of synchronous machines, which is kinetic energy, stored in the inertia of the drivetrain. To provide an adequate “inertia” for the power system in the future, modern control methods for converter-based generation are required, thus enabling converters to provide instantaneous reserve capacity. The following paper analyzes the transient behavior of a grid-connected converter with different control schemes focusing on the impact on the power system by means of simulations.
