This paper describes a 6.6 kW bi-directional AC/DC isolated converter designed for an electric vehicle (EV) charging application. The PFC stage is designed based on a bi-directional totem pole PFC converter operating at 67Khz. The bi-directional DC/DC stage operates at 200Khz based on a CLLC converter with a symmetric resonance network operating on both sides. Regulation of output voltage is achieved by varying the intermediate DC link voltage from 390V to 680V for the required output voltage of 250V to 450V for a typical EV charging application. Design guidelines for CLLC fixed frequency converter resonance components are provided. Further, results are detailed for an experimental prototype of a 6.6 kW converter using Cree 1000V/65mohm (C3M0065100K) devices for both totem pole and CLLC stages.
