An investigation into the impact of partial volume correction on detection rate of epilepsy using 18F-FDG PET

Partial volume effect (PVE) leads to errors in the quantification of local tracer concentration in 18F-FDG PET imaging. This study aimed to investigate whether the detection rate of epilepsy could be improved after partial volume correction (PVC). Fourteen epilepsy patients and nineteen controls who had undergone PET/MR examinations were included in this study. Then two MRI-based PVC algorithms were applied on PET images after pre-processing. To compare the detection rate of epilepsy before and after PVC, individual SPM analysis was performed using a control group. Results indicated that abnormalities were detected in 11 patients (79%) before PVC and 12 patients (86%) after PVC. But the improvement was not significant with the small data set by the McNemar test. We hold the view that PVC might improve the detection rate of epilepsy and more quantifications will be conducted as the future works.
