The broad rollout of battery electric vehicles in combination with the decarbonization of the power generation can play a key role in the reduction of CO2 emissions. However, an increasing share of these electric vehicles also creates new challenges for the power distribution grid. Thus a systematic and data-driven analysis and forecast of power demand for the public charging infrastructure is a prerequisite to enable successful decision making, power grid planning and implementation. In this work, a method was developed for the analysis and forecast of the demand for charging power of the public charging infrastructure in Hamburg. In total 124,990 charging events were analyzed with a total charged energy of approximately 1.4 GWh in the timeframe between December 2017 and November 2018. Distinct charging profiles were created based on charging power, current type, use case and location. Different scenarios are created to forecast the charging power demand for the year 2025 by applying Monte Carlo methods.
