Our modern society processes stores and transmits more and more data. Driven by these requirements the data center industry was booming over many years and it seems there is not end to this trend. Despite of the fact that the IT equipment data processing capability in a given 19” space is increasing drastically, the total power demand and the overall power density reaches higher and higher values. Also the infrastructure components, such as the power system followed this trend of increased power density and efficiency. By the contribution of wide band gap devices and based on new architectures we can continue this trend on efficiency and density gain in the future. In a data center there are two main areas where the power is routed by power electronics. The most visible path can be observed from the medium voltage power input to the server supply. Another one is inside the server from the power input terminals of to the processors. Both parts contribute to the overall efficiency and reliability. Modern Semiconductors and advanced packaging technology will allow realizing cost effective modular systems, which will support flexible architectures.
