Due to dynamic shift in power system structure, caused by energy transformation more generation units are being interfaced trough power converters. This leads to decrease in number of units providing inertia to the grid. This could lead to problems with frequency stability in the power system after disturbance. In order to tackle this problem some solutions, such as virtual inertia are being tested. In order to propose operational schemes for inertia emulation it is necessary to estimate required total inertia in the power system. Goal of this research paper is development of mathematical model allowing testing of influence of system inertia on transient states in power system after imbalance between load and generation occurs. Underlying theory of synchronous generator and power grid modeling is presented. Computational program in Matlab was created and tested with IEEE-14 and -39 bus test networks. Results of simulations indicate significant influence of inertia on frequency transients.
