Inhalt:
This paper analyses the potential of the modular multilevel converter technology to provide fast frequency support for electrical power systems. To evaluate the potential, the energy storage capability of the MMC technology in compliance with European and German standards is investigated. Furthermore, an analytical approach to estimate the MMC energy storage capability is presented and compared to other technologies that can provide system inertia. A test system is sim-ulated in MatLab/Simulink in order to verify the mathematical estimation.
