The advancement of the energy transition causes new challenges for distribution system operators. The integration of decentralized generation plants is steadily increasing the number of intermediate- and counter-feeds in medium- and high-voltage grids. In addition, an increasing number of operational-related switching status changes, grid expansion and volatile feed-in behavior is to be expected. Therefore distribution system operators must continuously verify and evaluate the basic requirements for protection concepts: selectivity, speed and reliability. Regarding the increasing complexity and number of different grid scenarios new and innovative procedures must be used to evaluate the protection coordination. This article presents a novel, deterministic optimization process for the automated protection coordination. General requirements provide the design and specification of a generic model for protection devices. This now called model-based process makes it possible to consider also user specific requirements. Therefore the substeps of the model-based process called initial protection coordination, assessment and adjustment are applicable for any grid scenario. The model-based process also provide the detection of non-selective tripping behavior.
