Utilization Increase of Stationary Energy Storage Systems Through the Use of Multiple Application Possibilities for Economic Integration for Industrial Electricity Customers

This paper presents a method to increase the utilization of stationary battery storage systems with a maximum power of 2 MW and a capacity of 2 MWh and grid connections with a power of up to 5 MW for industrial electricity customers by the combined usage of two algorithms. Optimization of self-consumption of generation plants is a application where the economic operation of an energy storage system depends on a perfect design.The prevention of load peaks, on the other hand, depends on robust dimensioning of the storage system in order to handle possibly larger load peaks or to compensate forecast deviations as well. The combination of the two applications is intended to increase the utilization of the battery storage system, reduce the impact of load and generation peaks in the distribution grid, and additionally create an economic benefit. The method is based on an analytical view of the load profiles and a forecast of the next 48 hours. The new operation management adjusts the operating points of the algorithm in such a way that, as a first priority, load peaks are prevented and the energy required for this is recharged at times of low load on the grid. The evaluations showed that the new algorithm can limit the peak power at the grid connection and recharge the energy required for this purpose during periods of low grid load or during periods of high generation. The economic efficiency and utilization of the energy storage system could be increased in the process. The key finding of the usage of this kind of operation strategy is the significant reduction of the power band between maximum and minimum power at the grid connection. This enables a better linkage of power plants and high consumption, while at the same time reducing the impact on the distribution network.
