This paper presents a new safety-related automation drive architecture. It enables high-level safety functions including fieldbus-based multi-axis safe motion functions according to IEC 61800-5-2 with only a few low-cost programmable devices. The paper describes how cost-optimized safety architectures – already certified and proven in encoders – can also be used for automation drives, especially for multi-axis applications, e.g. robots, cobots, and automated guided vehicles.
