Light emitting diode (LED) lamps show nonlinear characteristics causing a negative influence on the power grid. This paper focuses on the higher harmonics caused by LED lighting components based on measurements with the aim of achieving a better understanding of the harmonic characterization of LED lamps. For this purpose, two measurement setups are proposed in this paper to identify the influence of the background harmonic distortions and the grid impedance on the harmonic current at the connection point of LED lamps. In this context, it is proposed to perform the harmonic measurement using a series impedance of an inductor to determine the influence of the different grid harmonic impedances. In addition, a harmonic fingerprint measurement setup is presented to determine the interaction between the voltage harmonic background and the harmonic caused by LED lighting components. These measurement setups provides a benchmark for researchers working on the power quality improvement of LED lamps.
