Integrated Control Method for Ramp Traffic Flow in Construction Area of Expressway

In order to alleviate the traffic congestion of the expressway construction section without interrupting the traffic, an integrated control method of ramp traffic flow was proposed. Based on METANET model, the traffic flow model and ramp control model were combined. Taking the total time of road network (TTS) as the control objective, this paper studied the decision variables of toll station channel number and induction switch to control the entrance and exit of toll station, and realized the optimal regulation and control of traffic flow on the ramp and the optimal shunting of traffic nodes. Under the actual engineering background, three control schemes were adopted to verify the effectiveness of the integrated control method. The simulation comparison results show that the total road network time of the proposed integrated control method is reduced by 10% and 2%, respectively, compared with the no-control and induced diversion methods. It is concluded that the integrated control method of ramp traffic flow can effectively alleviate the traffic congestion in the construction section of expressway reconstruction and expansion.
