Nanocrystalline materials are of rising interest for magnetic component design in high power, high frequency power electronics applications. In early 2021, Vacuumschmelze presented the VITROPERM 550HF material, which promises further weight/size reduction advantages as well as significantly reduced core losses compared to the established VITROPERM 500F material. In order to assess the characteristics of the new material with regard to its application in power electronics, two toroidal cores with virtually identical geometric properties are examined. The measurement of the B-H loop for a non-sinusoidal excitation shows a significant reduction in core losses of around 30 percent for the 550HF core over a wide flux density and temperature range.
