In the field of synchronous machines, the tooth wound winding plays an important role. It is found in small power range e.g. electric bicycle as well as in the MW range of a wind power plant. Yet, the higher content of harmonics of a tooth wound winding leads to problems in squirrel cage induction machines (IM) concerning the torque ripple and the self-starting capability. This paper presents an IM with a tooth wound winding in both stator and the rotor, which features low torque ripple. Furthermore, those harmonics that are important for the start-up performance, are examined in more detail. By taking the machine length into account, the performance of the prototype is compared with that of a squirrel cage IM with a conventional winding. The achieved results show that the proposed tooth wound IM reaches the same torque to volume ratio as a conventionally wound IM.
