The increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) offers many environmental and economic advantages. However, this will be accompanied by a huge burden on the power grid. Direct charging of EVs from photovoltaic (PV) system can mitigate the load of EVs on the grid. Nonetheless, charging efficiency of conventional solutions decreases dramatically under weak solar irradiance (winter, cloudy weather, etc.). In this paper, the reason for poor efficiency of current PV-EV charging will be addressed. Then, the proposed charging method as well as the topology of power converters to achieve high efficiency will be discussed in details.
