Due to their high theoretical capacity and abundance, rechargeable zinc batteries are ideal for future electrochemical energy storage systems. Despite encouraging progress in the development of zinc batteries, a number of challenges, mainly related to the electrolyte system, remain unresolved, limiting them to laboratory research and preventing widespread use as yet. In order to take full advantage of the high energy density of zinc, methods that enable reversible aluminium deposition need to be developed. This article details the challenges faced by zinc batteries and possible solutions. Both solid and liquid electrolytes are included.
