High voltage and high-power applications such as traction converters, medium voltage drives (MVD), commercial agricultural vehicles (CAV), etc. require innovative semiconductor solutions to increase their power density and to further improve their system efficiency. Successful implementation and acceptance of CoolSiC(TM) into applications such as solar string inverters, EV chargers, energy storage, and servo-motor drives, has increased the interest in CoolSiC(TM) for other high voltage and high-power applications such as traction propulsion systems and wind converters also. The material properties of SiC MOSFETs have enabled converter designers to increase switching speeds, reduce power losses, increase switching frequencies, and further optimize the system with regard to weight and volume. This paper provides insights into key requirements for traction converters, levers to optimize their design using the new 3.3 kV CoolSiC(TM) MOSFET (as compared to the state-of-the-art module), and their key features.
