In electric vehicles, harmonics overlay the current in the high voltage DC bus. This paper investigates the use of discontinuous pulse patterns to reduce simultaneously the battery current ripple and the switching losses of the main inverter. A simulation, which considers the whole powertrain and the mission profile of the vehicle, identifies the beneficial operation points of discontinuous pulse patterns. Measurements from an automotive test bench are presented which agree with the simulations.
