The consumer drives market is mainly served by cost-effective power semiconductor solutions such as reverse conducting (RC)-IGBTs. However, there is a worldwide demand for more efficient products to reduce energy consumption that lead to an overall more sustainable environment. To meet this goal, silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET can be used due to their superior intrinsic properties. SiC MOSFETs can enable creation of enhanced power density designs that not only comply with energy labeling regulations but also extend heat sink-less capabilities. This paper demonstrates the benefits of the CoolSiC(TM) MOSFET in low power consumer drives applications.
