This paper introduces a new family of intelligent power modules (IPMs) in a fully isolated dual in-line package. It incorporates 2nd generation, reverse-conducting IGBTs (RC-IGBT) for drives applications. This new IGBT technology offers higher current density and fewer power losses, making it the ideal technology for compact power modules. The new IPM family integrates power IGBTs, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) gate driver with bootstrap function, and temperature monitoring with analog feedback to the controller, thus minimizing external components. These features make the new IPM family a perfect match for inverter systems in major home appliances.
