The paper deals with the design optimization of the PFC stage in bidirectional OBC (On-board-charger) application. A comparison between 2-Level and multilevel topologies in terms of power semiconductor selection and overall system complexity, both at system level and at device level. The analysis at system level deeply evaluates the designs benefits, system efficiency, topologies behavior versus switching frequency and voltage stress on the devices. Regarding the devices comparison, an evaluation between 650V SiC MOSFETs and 650V GaN HEMTs has been performed to find out the benefits related with the different technologies.
