Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) continue to gain popularity among many application areas. In this study, the effects of the tradeoffs between using two of the most preferred PMSM driving methods, field oriented control and block commutation, are investigated. By comparing power loss differences of the PMSM and MOSFET, as well as PMSM current characteristics between the two methods, the effect of preferring a simpler control method on electronics was examined. These comparisons are made with both the simulation and experiment.
