The focus of this paper is on High Voltage (HV) Silicon (Si) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) power semicon- ductor devices targeting high power electronics applications such as grid systems, industrial drives, railway traction and renewable energy converters. An introduction and outlook with respect to recent advancements and upcoming development trends of HV power semiconductors is provided covering the Si IGBT, Si IGCT and SiC MOSFET. The HV “Si versus SiC” competitive journey in coming years is addressed by highlighting critical technology and performance challenges defining the timelines for both Si and SiC roadmaps.
