A hybrid uninterruptible power supply (HUPS) describes a traditional UPS performing additional functionality on the rectifier side, like providing primary control reserve, peak-shaving and increasing self-consumption of renewable energy. This paper presents a comparison of a Hybrid-UPS in contrast to the combination of a traditional UPS in parallel to a standalone battery storage system within an industrial microgrid. This comparison shows that the Hybrid-UPS can achieve significant synergy effects, in particular reduction of battery stress and higher operational efficiency. These advantages allow saving investment and operational costs.
