Compared with the solid-state transformer (SST), the monolithic rectifier (MREC) is a new topology based on semi-controlled and fully-controlled devices, which makes full use of the advantages of low conduction loss and high-power density of thyristors. Besides, both the voltage and current waveforms of the bridge arm are highly controllable. This paper expounds the circuit configuration of MREC and verifies the effectiveness via a 5MW simulation and a downscaled experiment. Furthermore, MREC is compared with the SST based on the cascaded H-bridge (CHB) structure in technical economy. The comparison results demonstrate that MREC offers significant advantages in both cost and efficiency.
