On the way to the All Electric Society, modern DC-systems enable direct integration of various building blocks, for example battery storage systems, renewable energy sources, electric vehicle charging stations, and industry machine sectors. However, this variety brings new challenges with it. While the origins for transient overvoltages leading to damage or even hazardous conditions are in first instance independent of the type of electrical current (AC or DC), tailored surge protective devices are needed for appropriate system protection. This work provides an overview of today’s technologies for surge protective devices and their utilization in DC-systems.
