The new rotor configuration, which combines lateral and spoke magnets within one rotor core, offers an effective approach to reducing magnet material in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). This design uses a higherorder harmonics of rotor magneto motive force (MMF) to generate torque, therefore it is referred as Harmonic Utilization PM (HUPM) rotor. In this paper, two four-pole PMSMs with different rotor topologies for industrial roller conveyor applications are analyzed. The first motor uses a conventional interior permanent magnet (IPM) rotor with four magnets embedded in the rotor core. The second motor is built with the proposed HUPM rotor, which use only three magnets. The obtained results indicate 30% magnet weight reduction using the new rotor design, while maintaining high torque density and efficiency.
