In this paper a novel approach for Hardware-in-the-Loop (short: HiL) based wind turbine certification is proposed. Here, a signal HiL system is used to support the software development and certification process. The use of a signal HiL overcomes the need of complex and expensive full power test benches and the installation of electrical drive trains. The structure and configuration of the signal HiL is explained in detail. Further, the physical system models of the mechanical and electrical drive train are introduced. Special focus is paid to the real-time simulation model of the electrical drive train, where a full-scope FPGA implementation with a calculation period of 80 ns is applied. The extensive descriptions presented in this paper are supported by a comparison of the HiL simulation results with field measurements achieved during fault ride-through (short: FRT) measurement campaigns.
