In the context of the electrical energy transition, the distribution grids' loads are changing. Due to the increased feed-in of subordinately connected grid participants, the resulting bidirectional power flows in particular lead to new challenges in the distribution grid. In addition to conventional grid upgrades, automation systems offer another solution to prevent critical situations in the grid due to reversing power flows. The implementation of such systems is not useful for every grid area and leads to high investment and operating costs. Therefore, algorithms are required to identify potential grid areas for distribution grid automation systems. In this research study, the Look-Beyond algorithm was developed. It identifies grid areas of defined size based on the evaluation of grid stations and makes an equipment recommendation for a distribution grid automation system. Finally, the results were compared and verified with a simple search algorithm for different use cases and grid area sizes.
