This paper proposes a universal control scheme for three-phase (3-ph) and single-phase (1-ph) compatible bidirectional ac/dc converters operated in the inverter mode. The proposed approach can simultaneously regulate the ac voltages and balance the interphase current stress by using independent hybrid control strategies for different bridge legs, which is capable to improve leg utilizations in the 1-ph mode. Thereby, the output power 1-ph operations can be doubled to 2/3 of the 3-ph rated power without increasing the current stress per phase or any over-design of components. Simulations and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
